Onward to Wilpena Pound

Wilpena Pound is in the stunning Flinders Ranges, it is only 120kms from Quorn and it still took us half a day to get there, so many things to look at!

There are going to be a lot of pictures on this posting. This spot was called Kanyaka which means simply a piece of rock. It was very important to the local people because it was a permanent source of water so made for a good resting place. Very interesting rock formations and informative signs as you can see. We spent a bit of time roaming about the tracks here before moving on.

Kanyaka Station was in operation from 1852 - 88, eventually being abandoned due to drought. Prior to this it was one of the largest in the district and due to the stone used in the buildings much of it is still intact. It's amazing how much of our trip this far has been historic in nature, it's been very interesting.

Arkaroo Rock was a good couple hours walk likely because I can't stop myself taking pictures of every little thing that catches my eye on the way and there was a LOT to look at. The walk up wasn't particularly difficult, and the overhang with the paintings was well worth it, further down the track we came across another spot that looked like there were some paintings originally but without the protective cage it was almost gone.

And then we were at Wilpena Campground. It's a lovely spot with plenty of space and a lot of shady trees, the amenities were nice and the staff friendly. We took ourselves for a walk up the hill behind the campground to see the sunset and because we hadn't walked up enough hills yet today. Bonus for the wild Emu we found up there foraging through the shrubs, he didn't seem to mind sharing the hill with us for a while before he wandered off. This was a whole other adventure which will have to wait for me to find time and internet access for another post.
